Day 1: Istanbul Gallipoli 莂nakkale (L, D) (Start your 4-day tour with a pickup from your hotel in the Sultanahmet or Taksim area of the city, or from central Istanbul. Then, travel by comfortable, air-conditioned coach to the battlefields of Gallipoli.
On route, listen fascinated as your guide gives you the background on Gallipoli — the peninsula where one of WWI’s bloodiest campaigns was waged. On April 25, 1915, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) mounted an Allied attack on Constantinople, the then name for Istanbul. The campaign was fiercely resisted by the Ottoman Turks and lasted more than eight months, resulting in thousands of fatalities. ( (
Stop for lunch in the area, and in the afternoon, take a Gallipoli walking tour as your guide explains the terrible events that took place here. Visit Australia’s Lone Pine memorial and view the trenches at Johnston’s Jolly and The Nek, a mountain ridge that presided over a failed Australian attack. Stand at ANZAC Cove, where the first landings were made, and see the Chunuk Blair New Zealand Memorial, the site of a heroic New Zealander stand.
Afterward, travel across the Dardanelles Strait and check in at your 莂nakkale hotel in time for dinner. ( (
Overnight: 4-star Iris Hotel or similar in 莂nakkale
Day 2: 莂nakkale Troy Pergamum Kusadasi (B, L, D) (After breakfast, drive to the UNESCO-listed archaeological site of Troy, believed to be the location of the ancient city that featured in the poet Homer’s work, The Iliad.
Explore with your guide as you hear about Troy’s main claim-to-fame: the Trojan War of the 13th or 12th century BC, when after a 10-year siege, the city fell to the Greeks when they smuggled soldiers inside the walls hidden in a giant wooden horse. Hear, too, about the Greek myth of the Trojan prince, Paris, whose flight with Zeus’ daughter, Helen, triggered the war.
Ogle the ruins and take photos of the replica wooden horse that symbolizes Troy's famous past. Continue to Pergamum and, after a break for lunch at a local restaurant, tour the remains of this once-powerful Greco-Roman city. Behold the theater, temples and library, and see the Asclepion, the medical school where mud baths, herbal remedies and other strange treatments were meted out in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.
(After exploring here and time at a leather handicrafts center, travel to your Kusadasi hotel. Check in for two nights, enjoy dinner and spend the evening as you wish. ( (
Overnight: 4-star Marina Hotel or similar in Kusadasi
Day 3: Kusadasi Ephesus Kusadasi (B, L, D) (Head out after breakfast to enjoy a day of guided sightseeing around UNESCO-listed Ephesus, once the Roman capital of Asia Minor and one of the Mediterranean’s best-preserved ancient cities.
Take a guided walk and gaze in awe at the Library of Celsus and 24,000-seater Grand Theater, where St Paul is said to have preached. Stroll along the colonnaded Arcadian Way where Cleopatra and Mark Anthony once processed in 31 BC, and see other sites such as the Roman bathhouse and Temple of Hadrian.
(Stop for lunch in town and visit the ruined Temple of Artemis, built in around 550 BC and once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Before returning to Kusadasi, visit a carpet workshop to learn about Turkey’s centuries-old carpet-making tradition. Watch the skilled artisans at work and discover how the different weaving techniques determine the carpets’ values.
Finish your day at Kusadasi, with the evening at leisure and dinner at your hotel.
Overnight: 4-star Marina Hotel or similar in Kusadasi
Day 4: Kusadasi (B) (Your 4-day tour ends at your Kusadasi hotel after breakfast, leaving you free to stay on in the town or travel elsewhere independently. -
